Morning Read: Last night Eli Morgan pitched six innings allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts against the Toronto Blue Jays. Overall, on the season he holds an impressive 3.77 SIERA. Let's take a quick look at Morgan, shall we?
As to last night's performance, his nine strikeouts came with an overall CSW rate of 32%. Each one of his pitches (four-seam, slider, and changeup) finished the night with a 30 CSW% or higher. Rather impressive. When it comes to the season he currently holds a 26.1 K%, 11.0 SwStr%, and 28.2 CSW%. It looks to me like the strikeouts could stick.
As for hard contact allowed, we have an issue. He lets up a ton of hard contact, he has a 2.89 HR/9, 12.5 Barrel%, 115.2 maxEV, and a 40.2 HH% against him. Those are all very bad numbers. He is a fly ball pitcher and when fly ball pitchers let up a ton of home runs it is never a good thing. Here's the thing though, he has never been a pitcher to give up home runs in the minors. If you take a look at his xFIP you'll see a 4.19 projected ERA which means if he can fix this issue he can be a decent pitcher.
In Morgan's last four starts he's faced the Blue Jays, Astros, Athletics, and the Astros again. Tough opponents for sure. I would keep an eye on him and see if he fixed the home run issue because if he does he could be a decent add down the stretch.
* I will be on vacation starting Saturday 8/7 until Tuesday 8/17. I will try my best to update the chart when possible but if not I will be doing this article every day.*
Today's Streamer: Luis Patino had no issues handling the New York Yankees in his last out as his fastball was very impressive. Seattle comes to town as Patino takes the mound for another start. Besides the fact that Patino is fantastic at home so far this season, the Mariners tend to strike out a lot. They have the second-highest strikeout rate on the season as a team, you can see why this is so appealing. Patino has high strikeout potential so this can become a fantastic stream. Oh and I almost forgot, Patino is our stream of the week!
