Morning Read: So how about this guy Cal Quantrill? Since July, in seven starts, Quantrill has put together a 1.96 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. I have had a few questions about his legitimacy especially since he is pitching deep into games. In these seven starts, he has changed anything compared to earlier in the season, no rise in velocity, and no change in pitch mix. Yet before this stretch, he had a 6.46 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. Underlying numbers say he was better but likely a four ERA type of pitcher. So that leaves me to, is this seven-game stretch luck?
In these seven starts, he had a .228 BABIP, 89.1 LOB%, 4.04 FIP, 8.6 SwStr%, and an 11.4 K-BB%. Clearly there seems to be some luck there. He does have a deep arsenal, I'll give him that, but he has no true swing and miss pitch. His sinker doesn't even induce weak contact. His four-seam has a 137 wRC+ and .173 ISO against it. The cutter is working but seems to be overperforming and overall he doesn't have a pitch that creates hitters to chase outside of the zone. I just don't see much here and it's not like he is getting a ton of strikeouts besides his one last start. Unless he figured out some magic secret sauce last night, I don't see this continuing so I wouldn't run out to grab him. If you have him though, you might as well keep holding.
* I will be on vacation starting Saturday 8/7 until Tuesday 8/17. I will try my best to update the chart when possible but if not I will be doing this article every day.*
Today's Streamer: Now Adrian Houser technically is confirmed yet (typing this up on Monday). If he does get confirmed I like him a lot against the Chicago Cubs. I like him against the Cubs for obvious reasons, they have an extremely depleted lineup that any pitcher should be able to handle. I would just make sure the wind is blowing out like crazy or anything. If Houser does not pitch my pick would be Ross Stripling against the Angels.
Shallow League Option: Adrian Houser.
Deep League Option: Don't worry everyone, I took away that horrible J.A. Happ pick. You can all thank me later. We are going to switch it up and roll with Nestor Cortes Jr. Sure, the underlying metrics aren't the best but he messes with hitter's timing and is often successful at inducing weak contact. The Royals are always and up and down offensively and I think they could struggle against the way Cortes pitches.
Looking For Strikeouts: Ross Stripling, Triston McKenzie, and Luis Patino.
Looking For Quality Starts: Adrian Houser, Steven Matz, and Ross Stripling.
Looking For Wins: Adrian Houser, Steven Matz, and Ross Stripling.
Looking For Ratios: Adrian Houser, Nestor Cortes Jr, and Ross Stripling.
Tomorrow's Streamers: Tarik Skubal and Tyler Anderson.
The Day After: Logan Webb, Vladimir Gutierrez, and Erick Fedde.
