Morning Read: Let's do a flash round of is it for real? Tylor Megill pitched another great start, this time against the Brewers, is he legit? I think the strikeouts are very legit with his above-average breaking balls. Do I think it will be smooth sailing? Likely not but he is well worth the ride.
Are the nine strikeouts from Kolby Allard legit? On the night he had 11 whiffs and a 37% CSW rate. But he did face the Tigers who strikeout a ton. On the season Allard only has a 10.0 SwStr% and 23.2 K% so this could have easily just been the Tigers.
Is Wily Peralta for real? With a low CSW rate on the night and a super low strikeout rate, I wouldn't expect Peralta to get six strikeouts in seven innings often. Overall his low three ERA comes with a FIP, xFIP, and SIERA almost a full two runs higher. Don't buy into this yet.
What about Bailey Ober? In terms of strikeouts, I don't buy him getting seven in just five innings. He has continued to struggle and on top of that, the Twins are babying him. In seven starts he has reached five innings just twice. He really only has one pitch and all of his breaking stuff gets crushed by hitters. Don't buy into this start at all.
Today's Streamer: Our streamer of the week has arrived! Merrill Kelly takes on the Rockies at home. Keyword in that sentence: home. Kelly has been great at home this season but more importantly, the Rockies are always terrible on the road. Attach Kelly's recent 20.5% K-BB% with that and this looks like a fantastic option.
Shallow League Option: Tony Gonsolin is your guy if he is out there. He gets the Marlins and has finally come full circle. His stuff is finally starting to show as you can see by his 14.4 SwStr% in his last three starts. I always loved Gonsolin, his arsenal, the movement on his pitches, and the way he attacks hitters. I expect him to be a very good pitcher in the second half.
Deep League Option: Merrill Kelly.
Looking For Strikeouts: Tony Gonsolin, Merrill Kelly, and Dane Dunning.
Looking For Quality Starts: Tony Gonsolin, Merrill Kelly, and Johnny Cueto.
