Morning Read: Good morning everyone! So how about Zach Thompson? Last night he finished with 11 strikeouts, 16 whiffs, and a 38 CSW%. Wild. Through four starts he has a 2.00 ERA, 1.71 FIP, and 34.2 K%. That's freaking impressive. To boot he has the SwStr% and CSW to match it all. Where the heck did this guy come from? And is this real?
Well, the basic metrics say it is. Even the LOB% and BABIP show there is no luck involved here. So far the cutter and curveball have been great this season. They have induced weak contact while also producing whiffs. He doesn't get a lot of chases outside of the zone which is okay because that is something a pitcher could easily work on and it looks like as of right now he doesn't even need it. The curveball breaks hard and is just a great-looking pitch. I think what works so well is the fact that his four-seam, cutter, and sinker (rarely throws it) all come out looking the same but move differently. So hitters are staring at three fastballs, all of which break differently, and then he suddenly hits them with a curve that just disappears when it approaches the zone.
The guy has a strikeout rate over 30% in three of four starts and an overall 26.0 K-BB%. I'm finding it hard not to buy in here.
Today's Streamer: It's one of those days where I am indecisive so I am rolling with two options! Ross Stripling gets the Baltimore Orioles who have arguably been the worst offense as of late with a 46 wRC+ in the last week. Stripling has been pitching well and while I am not sure how long that lasts we might as well keep riding this train. Patrick Sandoval has been on fire with a 25.7 K-BB% and 19.2 SwStr% in his last three starts. He continues to produce insane numbers. The Rays do hit left-handed pitching well at home but how can we not go with Sandoval?
Shallow League Option: Ross Stripling and Patrick Sandoval.
Deep League Option: Sammy Long! I love what this dude brings to the table with such a good mix of velocity in his repertoire. I'll take him against Oakland at home in that pitcher-friendly ballpark.
Looking For Strikeouts: Patrick Sandoval, Ross Stripling, and Jake Odorizzi.
