Morning Read: Another pitcher that I've had a ton of questions about is Kenta Maeda. Is the 6.56 ERA going to last? No. Is he a sub-three ERA pitcher? Not likely. Coming into draft season Maeda was being taken at his ceiling and it's really biting Maeda owners in the you know what.
The main issue with Maeda, at least in my opinion, is his slider command. I noticed last year that he left his slider in the heart of the zone at a high rate. In fact, he had the second most thrown sliders over the middle of the plate last season. When he threw it there opposing hitters killed it and if you compare his slider's stats between the two months of baseball last year, you'd see hitters were catching on in the second month. Well, it is happening again. He is leaving it in the middle of the zone and hitters are taking advantage, especially Franmil Reyes. You can read what I wrote back in January here.
Now it is early and these things can be fixed and adjustments can be made. If you are a Maeda owner you are stuck holding on to him (don't drop him!). Perhaps he makes a pitch mix change and reels that slider usage in? Time will tell.
Today's Streamer: Today's streamer is Dylan Cease and I hate every part of it. Cease has been extremely inconsistent with his command and has had a disappointing season thus far. If Cease were to have a good start in the month of April it has to be today. Let's locate that fastball up in the zone and use that slider to induce whiffs Cease! If he doesn't do it here, you need to flat out drop Cease if you haven't already.
Shallow League Option: Dylan Cease.
Deep League Option: Luke Weaver gets the Rockies and I was oh so close to picking him over Cease. But I like to give people a chance. What can I say? I'm a nice guy like that.
Looking For Strikeouts: Dylan Cease.
