Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Tarik Skubal
Current ADP: 319
Brief Examination: Skubal struggled in his first major league stint producing a 5.63 ERA and 5.75 FIP. The key here though, is how he kept a high strikeout rate finishing the season with a 27.6 K%. We also saw a pitcher who wasn’t afraid to try and get opposing hitters to chase. He hit the zone slightly below averaged and paired it with an above-average O-Swing% of 34.6%.
In the offseason, Skubal went to driveline to redesign his changeup. According to Mining The News he was looking for a diving, fading changeup. His changeup was already great in 2020 so this is very interesting. Pair that with his four-seam that has a ton of rise and I love it.
Interesting Stat: In his two years in the minors Skubal never had an ERA higher than 2.58 and never had a strikeout rate under 30%.
Role: We aren’t sure who will start the season in the Tigers’ rotation when it comes to their rookies. Regardless Skubal is an attractive option at this point in the draft with his high strikeout upside. If your bench can afford him potentially starting in the minors he is well worth drafting.
