Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Tanner Roark
Current ADP: 732
Brief Examination: Tanner Roark has long been the most boring pitcher in baseball. While he is boring he has always been consistent having an above-average ERA in six of his eight seasons.
The strikeouts are limited and always have been but the main issue is the horrendous season he is coming off of. In 2020 he had a 6.80 ERA, 6.86 FIP, and 5.36 SIERA. The sinker seems to be the culprit here with opposing hitters grabbing a 303 wRC+ and .537 ISO against it. Also, something notable is the overall dip in velocity. His sinker dropped from around 92 MPH to just 90.
Interesting Stat: Since 2016 he hasn’t had an above-average O-Swing% or SwStr% (not good).
Role: If the velocity comes back and we chalk up the bad 2020 to the shortened season he could be somewhat valuable in NFBC DC’s. Between 2016-2019 he averaged 184 innings each season, something that would be very valuable this season even if he puts up just an average performance.
