Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Martin Perez
Current ADP: 622
Brief Examination: Slotted into the poor Red Sox rotation, Perez could see 150/160 innings. The problem is that Martin Perez has never really been good. He has a career 4.71 ERA, 4.51 FIP, and 14.9 K%.
He did do something interesting last year as he ditched the sinker and leaned more heavily on his cutter and changeup. The cutter is used really well and is without a doubt his best pitch. His changeup can induce a lot of whiffs but the drawback is the hard contact it lets up. He needs better command and should throw it out of the zone more to create those chases he desperately needs.
Interesting Stat: In the past two seasons Perez was 90th percentile or better in terms of hard-hit rate.
Role: If Perez can move that changeup outside of the zone more he might become somewhat of a viable pitcher. He is interesting to me in terms of streaming if that happens. For now, leave him on the wire.
