Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: JT Brubaker
Current ADP: 463
Brief Examination: The surface stats of a 5.53 ERA and 1.42 WHIP isn’t great, but it does come with a 4.37 FIP and 65.3 LOB%. As a starter, he relied on four pitches a sinker, slider, curve, and four-seam. His strength comes against right-handed hitters where he features his slider and it resulted in an overall 15.5 SwStr% against them.
The issue comes against left-handed hitters where he leans on the sinker. Most notably he ups his four-seam usage against them and it had a .530 wOBAcon and 3.4 SwStr%. This is tough because the sinker and four-seam have great tunneling ability and they both match well with his curveball. I can’t suggest he completely ditches the four-seam against LHH but maybe throw it less?
Overall he has an intriguing arsenal as the sinker and slider are both above-average in whiffs and the curveball shows potential.
Interesting Stat: His slider had the seventh-highest CSW (38.8%) amongst all sliders in the league.
Role: While I want to have hope and assume he figures out the right sequencing, he pitches for the Pirates. Leave him on the wire and watch what he does.
