Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Jorge Lopez
Current ADP: 1016
Brief Examination: Things don’t look so great for Jorge Lopez. In three seasons he has started 33 games producing a 6.03 ERA and 5.13 FIP (not great). The walk rate isn’t ever bad but the strikeout rate is typically low and supported by his career SwStr% of 8.8%.
Last season he upped his sinker usage while decreasing the four-seam. It makes sense since the sinker is better but what I am curious about is his changeup. He only throws it about 10% of the time but I would love to see him throw it more. It has some good vertical and horizontal movement to it and has had a decent whiff rate the past two seasons.
Interesting Stat: The last time Lopez produced a sub-four ERA at any level was in 2016.
Role: There isn’t much here, he just isn’t good. Even if he does roll with the changeup more it’s hard to see anything big coming. While he will likely start in the rotation don't expect it to last.
