Outside Of The Box: Dylan Cease
Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw-away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Dylan Cease
Current ADP: 379
Brief Examination: Dylan Cease started the year off great, but everyone knew regression was coming and it certainly did. In August he pitched 33.2 innings with a 2.14 ERA. The problem was that ERA came with an 89.6 LOB% and 5.66 FIP. Which lead to September and Dylan producing a 5.64 ERA.
The main issue is his fastball command. This is no secret and has been an issue for a while now. If he can fix this issue in the offseason Cease can be a steal in drafts, but it is a big if. They did bring in the guy who fixed Giolito and Cease is doing the same workouts that helped Giolito so there is hope.
Interesting Stat: In two seasons Cease’s slider has averaged a .255 wOBA against, 33.6 K%, 14.8 SwStr%, and 2.8 pVAL. It’s a great pitch and he utilizes it very well.
Role: Watch him in spring training and see if the command shows up. If it does, he is worth taking a shot on in drafts. Worst case you just drop him.
