Outside the box is a daily article that is simple, fresh, and innovative. Here, we will be walking throw away pitchers to the pedestal for a quick examination of their skills.
On The Pedestal: Alex Cobb
Current ADP: 508
Brief Examination: Alex Cobb leaves Camden Yards and heads over to the Los Angeles Angels, a team that needed depth and veteran arms. Last season Cobb was able to pitch 10 starts accumulating 52.1 innings with a 4.30 ERA and 4.87 FIP.
Cobb has always had decent stuff it was just a matter of him staying healthy. The sinker did give off a torrid 190 wRC+ and .235 ISO which isn’t the best since it’s meant to create weak contact. The mediocracy of this pitch is likely due to the lack of movement and velocity.
He does have a stellar splitter, one like Gausman. Last season it had a 48.0 O-Swing%, .106 ISO, and 21.8 SwStr%. It actually makes me think maybe he should follow Gausman’s game plan. Just lower the sinker usage and use the splitter a ton.
Interesting Stat: Whenever Cobb has pitched over 50 innings his worse ERA ever was 4.30.
Role: If he can stay healthy and if he could do something about that horrible sinker of his he could be of some value. The Angels will rely on him for innings so even if he puts up average numbers you should get a good amount of counting stats.
